Our lives consist of a series of events and experiences. Some are good, some are bad; some we learn from, some we don’t. Many people would say that when times are good, they are just okay; but when times are bad, they are really bad.
Adversity can produce a negative mental and emotional state. It is as if a dark cloud has been placed over our lives. There are times when things seem at their worst and that the cloud engulfs our life, leaving us seemingly in complete darkness.
It is in these dark times that we can struggle in our quest for answers to find a way out of our circumstances. Fears of taking the wrong action cause us to procrastinate. This dark period can even cause us to ‘give up’ striving for our dreams and aspirations.
This mental state can induce depression and anxiety that lead to a perpetual cycle of emotions and thoughts that include: fear, anger, frustration, desperation and ‘worst-case scenario thinking’.
We become blind to the way forward. With seemingly no way out of the ‘mess’ that we are in, we can sink deeper and deeper into the darkness; that has become our reality. The darkness that was first resented eventually becomes accepted; then finally, it is embraced.
A man can get used to any condition he is in, no matter how harsh it may seem to him, and as such, accept it as his own and live within its physical and mental confines. However, even in the midst of darkness, if we seek, we can find a light to guide us through these difficult and painful times.
There is a guide we can follow, so we do not have to improvise our way through life. There is a script available for us to follow: the scriptures containing the word of God. The word of God, contained in the Bible, says:
Ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7
All we need to do is seek Him and we will find Him. If we seek Jesus with all our heart, He tells us that we will never again walk in darkness.
I am the light of the world – whoever follows me will have the light of life and will never walk in darkness. John 8:12
He reassures us of His promise of ‘light’ not only for you and me but for everyone in the world.
While I am in the world, I am the light for the world. John 9:5
Jesus Christ is a light we can trust to lead us out of our darkness. He tells us:
I am the way, the truth, and the life. John 14:6
In this verse He reaffirms to us that His way is truthful, a way we can trust and believe in. Through Him we can find a way out of our darkness. There is a righteous way, lit by a ‘candle of faith’ burning ‘a flame of hope’. It is a candle that never dims, with a flame that never dies.
By seeking and accepting Jesus into our life, our way becomes no longer led by sight, but by faith: Faith in Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Through faith in Him, we develop a renewed sense of hope for our present and future.
Hope is the vein, which our future dreams and aspirations flow through. When we lack hope something inside us dies. When our hope is made up of faith and belief in Jesus Christ, our life is renewed. We develop a new sense of meaning and purpose for our life.
We begin to accept responsibility for our prior life choices and accept that our ‘brain power’ needs the guidance of ‘God’s will power’. We choose to succumb to His will, in the belief that as an earthly Father loves and guides his children, so He will love and guide us.
Proverbs tells us how painful experiences can be used for positive change.
Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways. Proverbs 20:30
As physical pain is a signal that something is wrong with our body, mental and emotional pain is a signal that something is wrong with our thinking. So as medicine is healing to the body, new thinking is needed to heal the mind.
How long will we suffer before we acknowledge that our thinking has led us to where we are in our lives. It’s time for us to change, to ‘create a new self’. However, if we want to create a new self, first we have to stop being our old self.
The Bible instructs us in this necessary way of thinking.
So get rid of your old self which made you live as you used to – the old self that was being destroyed by its deceitful desires. Ephesians 4:22
The Psalmist asks God for something:
Create in me a pure heart and renew a steadfast spirit in me. Psalm 51:10
We can all ask Him, for this same blessing. Do not hold onto the words of men who say that, “Seeking God is for people who are weak.” On the contrary, it is not because we are weak that we seek God, ‘it is because we want to remain strong’. We are warned that,
It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think. But, if you trust in the Lord you will be safe. Proverbs 29:25
Trust in Him. He can turn our ‘mess’ — into ‘a message’. A message of hope and overcoming adversity can bless and enrich our lives and the lives of others.
During times of adversity, we can choose to ‘get bitter’ and become angry with the world and our circumstances. We can chose to just ‘get by’, accept our circumstances and just try survive the experience. Or we can choose to ‘get better’ and decide to ‘grow through’ the experience and learn and develop ourselves from it.
I have the strength to face all conditions by the power that Christ give me. Philippians 4:13
Through Christ, we are able to face all our life challenges with new thinking, renewed faith and hope for our future. It does not matter what we have done, forgiveness can be ours, through Jesus Christ.
I want you to realize today that our destiny supersedes what mistakes we have made. We may be feeling like we have blown it, we are too old, too far gone off the track. No mistake we have made is a surprise to God. He has already figured it out, and He has a comeback for our setback.
Through Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour, where there once was only darkness — we can now see light. Where we were lost – we are now found. Where we were blind – now we can see a new life that is full of hope and promise for the future.
A life through God’s will can bring light to the darkness that so many people live through, every day.
